Delayed sleep phase syndrome

Posted by Eeshan Chatterjee at 11:50 PM on March 16, 2009 Comments comments (0)

I've been suffering from a sleep disorder for a couple of months. I keep falling asleep during the daytime, and am awake and alert the whole night. A little research on the internet revealed that I've been suffering from severe DSPS. The wikipedia article has a detailed explanation to this diaorder, following are a few excerpts:

Delayed sleep-phase syndrome (DSPS), also known as delayed sleep-phase disorder (DSPD) or delayed sleep-phase typecircadian rhythm sleep disorder, a chronic disorder of the timing of sleep, peak period of alertness, core body temperature, hormonal and other daily rhythms relative to societal norms. People with DSPS tend to fall asleep some hours after midnight and have difficulty waking up in the morning. (DSPT), is a

The major feature of these disorders is a misalignment between the patient's sleep pattern and the sleep pattern that is desired or regarded as the societal norm.... In most circadian rhythm sleep disorders, the underlying problem is that the patient cannot sleep when sleep is desired, needed or expected.

Some features of DSPS which distinguish it from other sleep disorders are:

  • People with DSPS have at least a normal - and often much greater than normal - ability to sleep during the morning, and sometimes in the afternoon as well. In contrast, those with chronic insomnia do not find it much easier to sleep during the morning than at night.
  • People with DSPS fall asleep at more or less the same time every night, and sleep comes quite rapidly if the person goes to bed near the time he or she usually falls asleep. Young children with DSPS resist going to bed before they are sleepy, but the bedtime struggles disappear if they are allowed to stay up until the time they usually fall asleep.
  • DSPS patients can sleep well and regularly when they can follow their own sleep schedule, e.g. on weekends and during vacations.

People with DSPS tend to be extreme night owls. They feel most alert and say they function best and are most creative in the evening and at night. DSPS patients cannot simply force themselves to sleep early. They may toss and turn for hours in bed, and sometimes not sleep at all, before reporting to work or school. Less extreme and more flexible night owls, and indeed morning larks, are within the normal chronotype spectrum.

Representatives from SUN microsystems gave an introductary workshop on javaFX yesterday. I'd never believe that anyone outside the MIT faculty could make a powerpoint so boring. I mean when you are teaching something like a script, you cant just show slides and think that the session will be interesting.  Well, some of the demos were, and good goodies they did distribute, yet the session wasn't exactly the best of all. Today's session (It's presently underway) has had a much better start... will post about it soon.

Goa- day 1

This saturday, it so happened that I packed my bags and proceeded to the Udupi station. It was a half day in college, and the next two days, i.e. sunday and monday were off. Monday, cuz it was Republic day. At the station, the next train was going towards mumbai. I got on to the general compartment. Many like-minded fellas had joined me in that compartment. BTW, mine was a group of four, A V, Karan, Raunaq, and me. Four-and-a-quarter hours later when the train (Matsyagandha Exp.) pulled into a station called Madgaon, we felt that we could no longer bear the general compartment, and we disembarked. Again, a lot of like-minded people did. And before we knew it, the train rolled off. We went out, and saw that there was a pre-paid taxi stand. We had heard a lot about this state, it's beaches et al. We consulted a map painted on the wall, and started arguing where to head off to. Most of the people (~90%) were headed to Baga beach. That was instantly ruled out. Would be too crowded, and a lot of college people would be around. Hardly our type of a holiday. Karan had gone to this beach called Benaulim before, so we decided to go there. Our cab driver said that colva has more hotels and joints, but not a place was empty there. We finally checked into Carena Beach Resort @ Benaulim. It was already 10:15 by the time all this ended. After the initial settling into the room, we went to the beach. Took us 25 minutes to walk to it. We had heard a lot of positives about this shack called Jhoncy. As we approached the sea, this place was well-visible. And I must say, I had one of the best pork chilly frys ever. After a long, filling, and royal dinner, we went back to the resort. And retired for the day.

Chandni Chowk to China

This was the poster of one of the well publicised bollywood bakwaas. Dunno whats gotten into Akshay, he usually does better... Maybe it was just that he didn,t really want to give away too much of his own lifestory... but that dosent mean he makes a bad movie. Not that he actually makes the movie, but whatever, he should be sensible enough to understand what he is getting into. He was, well, flat throughout the 150 minutes. Deepika didn,t really had much acting to do, and that chinese get-up hid whatever expressions she may have rendered. The Chinese didn't add any special contribution to the film, and methinks Mithunda should take an indefinite break.
The music was the only saving grace, which, if not excellent, was atleast good. I kinda liked Chak lein de. The title track was kinda different but i did expect better from Bohemia. And Akshay, a good rap in a movie dosen,t mean that it can be repeated to lower, if not disasterous levels. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy did a good job of binding the movie together.
Overall, a mildly watchable movie, but I won't buy the DVD. Not that I anyways would, but it sounds better. Maybe to say that I won't download it would be more appropriate.
